From mid-2026, the IELTS exam will move to a digital-only format, and the traditional fully paper-based test will no longer be offered.
However, in selected regions, candidates will still have the option to complete the Writing section on paper.
The test format, skills assessed, and score validity will remain unchanged, so candidates can be confident that their results will continue to be accepted in the same way as before.
All existing paper-based test results will stay valid for the full two-year validity period.
For candidates applying for UK Visas & Immigration, the Secure English Language Test (SELT) will be available only in a fully digital format.
In addition, One Skill Retake will now be available for candidates who choose Writing on Paper. However, the retake must be taken in the same mode as the original test. This means that if a candidate chooses Writing on Paper, their One Skill Retake must also be completed on paper, not on computer.
